Why are my dog’s gums swollen?
Question by bcooper1975: Why are my dog’s gums swollen?
My dog’s gums are swollen pretty bad and he seems different. He doesn’t want to play as much and seems depressed. Right now he is sleeping and his “snoring” sounds strange. Like his breathing may be heavier. How concerned should I be? Could this be from something he has eaten? Help!

Take him to the vet, he could have an infected tooth or gingivits. This can be quite serious.

You know your dog best. He could have gingivitis if he needs a teeth cleaning but he might have a respiratory or oropharyngeal infection. Sounds like he needs veterinary care.

Dogs teeth and gingiva need care throughout their life. If not properly cared for many things can happen and the biggest is heart problems. He may need a thorough cleaning and possibly put on antibiotics. He might have developed a heart disease that needs medication. The best anyone can give you now is make that initial vet visit. That will be you best bet. 85% of dogs by the age of 3 have dental problems. Best of luck.

Sounds like an infection. Are the gums red also?
Are the teeth in bad shape with tartar buildup? The dog needs to go to the vet.
There may be a chance he has had an allergic reaction to something, and if that is the case and he is breathing funny, you may need to take him to the vet. See if the other symptoms I mentioned are present, and if they are it is probably an infection. If not, like I said it could be an allergic reaction. If you have some children’s liquid benadryl, give him some of that. Or r if it is a large breed dog, you can give the pills. Might need to check with vet on dosage.
